Glenora Wine Cellars

Founded in 1977 the Glenora Wine Cellers is one of the first of the “new” wineries that has demonstrated a particular interest in vinifera grapes and high quality wines. They are located on the western shore of Seneca Lake. Started by Gene Pierce, along with Eastman Beers, Edward Dalrymple, and Howard Kimble to take advantage of the newly enacted Farm Winery Act of 1976 the partnership purchased a old sheep barn with beautiful views of the lake. There initial successes were primarily with sparklers.

The third, and currant winemaker, Steve diFrancesco, has a real passion for the German aromatic varietals of Riesling and Gewurtztraminer. The result has been a marked consistency in wine qualities that had been previously sporadic. Long skin contact after pressing is permitted to extract more flavor and body from their Riesling wines, in particular in their Dry Rieslings. The extra care shows as the Dry Riesling was the highest rated of the wineries’ offerings tasted.
