The Standing Stone Vineyards, established in 1991 by Tom and Marti Macinski, is located in the south east banana belt region of Senaca Lake. The land upon which the winery now stands was originally planted by Charles Fournier and Guy DeVeaux of the Gold Seal to grow grapes for the company’s vinifera wines. As such, the vines represent some of the oldest European style plantings in the region with the original Riesling having been planted in 1972. The winery is named after the Oneida Indians who were known as "The People of the Standing Stone". The legend goes that when they found the standing stone they would find a land of perfection and plenty.
The winery focuses on minimal manipulation of the wines wherever possible. The wines are all estate bottlings with the grapes and the winemaking facilities, a large former barn, being on the same piece of land. The idea is to let the terroir come through into the glass. Considering the pedigree of the land this approach makes a lot of sense. The Standing Stones Rieslings show a particular focus on the superior fruit that these vineyards produce. Both of the wines tasted for this article very much expressed the character of the vintages. The 2006 was bright, sharp, and angular while the 2007 was rich, opulent, and very fruit focused.
