Top Rated Hudson Valley Winemakers
For the article the WinesNY.com staff reviewed over sixty wines and toured many of the Hudson's wineries. The focus was primarily on vintners that were producing wines from vinifera and especially estate vinifera. Although exceptions were made, generally the vintner had to have a website that allowed purchase of wines online to be included. Winemakers that focused exclusively on native or hybrid grapes were not really evaluated or considered as they represent a winemaking tradition that is in decline. Wines made from grapes sourced from outside of New York State were not considered or were their wines reviewed. Of the four winemakers featured two produce only vinifera wines and three produce estate bottling exclusively. These attributes are unusual in the region, but it is WineNY's opinion the Hudson River Valley AVA is moving towards a higher proportion of vinifera in the vineyard and higher proportion of wine growers versus winemakers. As such all four of these featured vintners are representative of this trend. Two of the winemakers featured have only released their first vintage in the 21st century and, although quite different in temperament, demonstrate important directions that appear to be taking hold in the AVA.
