Pretty medium ruby in glass thinning slightly at the rim. Currants, slate, coconut, and smoke with a touch of grass on the nose. Nice spicy white and cracked pepper over oak and bright acids. Opens in the glass to show more fruit focus, but maintains its earth and spice character. Black cherry develops with pencil shavings, and ripe fig. Tannins are smooth but still quite present. Textures are chewy, and mouth filling with particulates underneath. Finish shows solid grip with toast, smoke and undercurrents of tobacco. This is a fairly big wine for the Finger Lakes, has well defined flavors and good complexity. Will age nicely for five years or more. Not bad as an aperitif but will go best with game fowl or roast red meats. Very much a winter wine.
