Pellegrini’s 2005 Cabernet Franc shows medium garnet color in the glass thinning slightly at the rim. Lovely bouquet of raspberries and cherry candy with vanilla, a hint of herbs, mint, and bell peppers; complex nose. Surprisingly ripe and fruit focused for a New York Cabernet Franc which tend towards more earth tones. Flavors of red raspberry, black cherry, and a ghost of wild strawberry. Develops some spice, thistle, and bell pepper contrasts more typical of Cabernet Franc. Medium bodied wine is displays good balance of fruit and earth themes. Given how challenging the 2005 vintage was the wine sports surprising ripeness. Tannins are present and well integrated although a few more years in the cellar would pull the entire experience together. Finish builds with spice, tar, and bell pepper coming forward with fruit receding. Would work nicely as an aperitif. Pair with short ribs of beef with savory sauces.
