Millbrookâs 2007 New York State Merlot shows medium garnet and brick in the glass, thinning somewhat on the edges. Bouquet is earth focused with aromas of forest floor, mushrooms, walnut oil, and a touch of tar. Although still inspired by earth driven themes the wine shows a touch of cherry and cassis. Develops mineral notes with smoke and herbs of bay leaf and sage. Exhibits some spice and green peppercorn. Shows some good complexity and interest. This Merlot is medium bodied and has some good tannin grip. Interesting that Millbrook, which can and does produce excellent grapes in the Hudson Valley, designates this wine as a New York State appellation. Finish has good length with spices emerging. Could work as an aperitif. Pair with game fowl prepared with savory sauces.
